We are doing a set of blogs to help you with keeping those good employees.  Make sure you stay tuned for the next set of tips…

What is Culture?

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this question or been asked, “How do we get a good culture?”.

Culture refers to the social order of an organisation. It shapes and determines the behaviour of individuals within your business.  So, your company’s culture is unique to the people who work in it.

When the culture is aligned with your employee’s and business values, it can drive the business forward with a sense that everybody is pulling in the same direction. Individuals are enthusiastic and excited about pushing your success with a sense of ownership.

The structure of your business, its core mission and values, leadership, and communication style is so important to building a strong culture that will improve the identity of the company, employee retention, reputation and company image.

Step back and look at your business.

Let us try a bit of introspection. You want a commercially viable successful business that keeps growing.

Ask yourself?

Am I the type of employer who says, “I pay the bills here, so I say how it is” which in its worst extreme creates a sense of, “I’m paying you, therefore, I have given you a job to work on amazing projects why wouldn’t you love working here?”
Am I the perfectionist where I can be overly critical in my criticism of the 1% of my employees work that isn’t just right? Without acknowledging the other 99% of their work, which is be amazing?
Am I the person so proud that I have driven this business, given it my all, and so much of my energy that it has to work, am I projecting the culture within?

What steps to consider when evaluating your business?

How do we welcome new employees, and onboard them?  Are we organised, do we have processes, manuals, and training protocol?  Are we engaging?
Do we have an incentive program, and ways to reward, praise, and show that we value and appreciate our staff. Do you know what their interests are and make them feel like you know them?
Do you have good leadership, are the seniors approachable, do they listen and are open to change and suggestions available to give guidance?
Do you observe the team and notice interactions and communication styles, are people friends outside of work?
Do you ask your staff for insights on how things are going in the business and whether they have ideas?

In my series of short tips, I will give you quick, concise success hacks to retaining your quality employees based on years of interviewing candidates and hearing their thoughts and opinions that have influenced their decision-making. I have broken down this information into bite-size chunks just for you.
