Times have changed, and the hearsay has changed with it. The hundreds of misconceptions can misdirect you from a potential job. The goal of this blog is to demystify these myths and equip you with some useful knowledge.

Myth 1: Recruitment only happens at certain times of the year.
Recruitment is a complex process and doesn’t strictly follow the calendar. A lot of the time companies recruit on a need basis, when they have won a project or even several projects, these can occur at any time of the year. While this may be true for some industries, this does not mean these are the only times jobs are available. Letting us know you are interested in moving we can let you know of opportunities as they arise as they may not get advertised

Myth 2: My resume will get me the job and they will know what I can do.
The Resume is the first step, your ability to articulate what you can do at the interview and your personality and cultural fit are important too.

Myth 3: Job searching is a solo run.
Having Arcadia Recruitment which specialise in Design, Architecture, and Planning roles can give you advice, insight, market updates, and have direct contact with the decision-makers. Applying directly to the company can leave your resume in a pile with many others. Why not have us bat for you.

Myth 4: The more resumes you send, the better.
The best practice is to tailor your application for roles that you are 100% interested in. Highlight your values, skillset, and goals. Applying to too many places will get you confused and have your name bound around unnecessarily. Also, the industry can be a small one where everyone knows everyone and so you could be devaluing your resume as people talk. We are confidential, we work strategically and we have a personal approach to your information.

Myth 5: If you don’t hear back right away, you didn’t get the job.
The recruitment processes differ for each role and for each company. Maybe the client is on leave or on-site or interstate working. Don’t be afraid to follow up with us, it shows that you are eager for the role. Do this with caution though, following up every day is a whole other story.

Myth 6: You don’t need a cover letter.
A cover letter gives you the chance to highlight your expertise your chance to check your CV and remember your own strong points. You may include the things you are looking for and what you want to work on, letting us know what want.

Myth 7: Lowering your salary expectations will get you recruited faster.
Read and understand the job description and know the market by talking to us. Believe in yourself and your capabilities but be realistic so that will translate to when you are interviewed. If the employer sees you as confident that will also put them at peace knowing that you can handle the job.

Myth 8: My personal social media online presence is personal.
Employers research candidates, what does your profile picture say about you?

Myth 9: Contract roles are a waste of time.
Temporary roles can provide opportunities such as a foot in the door to prove your capabilities and allow you to trial the company as much as the company trialing you.

Myth 10: I will wait for all the things I want to be in my next job.
Waiting for the perfect role may lead to missed opportunities for growth and to learn new things. Life sometimes necessitates compromise whilst you aim for your ultimate goal.

Remember, job searching takes energy and process. It also requires you to be flexible and persistent.
