Monday Blues? A Change Might Be Due
Monday blues. It is your first day back at work after the weekend or even the holidays. Are you feeling it?
Monday blues are a set of negative emotions attached to the beginning of the work week. Lets face it we have all been there at some point in our lives. We experience the dread of work on a Sunday night. You may find yourself in this repetitive cycle that is emotionally exhausting 😔 bouts of Monday blues. The alarm goes off, and your brain wants to resist that it is time to get into action mode.
There have been studies for example Flinders University in 2008 did an extensive study that sleeping in later at the weekend delays your circadian phase and increases sleepiness the following week. Their studies revealed that those who overslept later than a normal workday experienced a 45-minute delay in their body clock. It creates a false expectation for the brain but leading to drowsiness after lunch and before dinner time. Be consistent with your wake-up times and make the most of your day.
A sudden shift from the leisurely Sunday to the rush on a Monday morning is draining so the best way to avoid this is to be prepared. Before you leave work on Friday be organised to know what your schedule will be the following week. Be positive and grateful. Gratitude is so important; recognizes the positives and things you like about work and the benefits it gives you. On Monday dress for success, do exercise, listen to music whatever makes you feel happy and empowered.
When you get to the office don’t listen to others complain that it is Monday, don’t join in by listening and agreeing it will only perpetuate and contribute, break the cycle. Make Monday and fun day, go for lunch with your colleagues or a friend.
If all fails after applying the above and the tiredness and stress continue maybe something is not right at work.
